Celebrating a Historic Moment: Rebecca Johnson OAM Appointed CEO, Queensland LGBTIQA+ Alliance

Following an extensive recruitment process conducted by the team at NGO Recruitment, the Queensland LGBTIQA+ Alliance is proud to announce the appointment of Rebecca Johnson OAM as its inaugural Chief Executive Officer.

A proud First Nations and Australian South Sea Islander woman raised in regional Queensland, Rebecca brings over 25 years of experience working alongside and advocating for LGBTIQIA+ Sistergirl and Brotherboy Queenslanders. Her appointment marks an exciting and historic milestone for our state.

Rebecca’s extensive experience spans local, national, and international advocacy, including representing Australia at the Equality Rights Coalition in Canada and the Human Rights Council in Geneva. She has held pivotal leadership roles, including Queensland Director for Pride Foundation Australia, Co-Founder of IndigiLez Women’s Leadership Group, and President of Brisbane Pride Festival, where she championed innovative activations during the COVID-19 pandemic, including regional pride initiatives.

In addition to her community leadership, Rebecca has held senior roles within the Queensland Government, working across Strategic Policy and Intergovernmental Relations, Early Childhood Education and Care, and First Nations Strategy and Partnerships. Recognised with an Order of Australia in 2023 for her volunteer work within Indigenous and LGBTIQA+ communities, Rebecca embodies the values of advocacy, collaboration, and inclusion.

Reflecting on the Alliance’s establishment, Rebecca said:

"Queensland’s first LGBTIQA+ Alliance is a defining milestone in our state’s history. As we embark on this critical work, I look forward to partnering with the Queensland Government, our urban, regional, and remote communities, the Consortium members, and LGBTQIA+ Roundtable members to drive meaningful change. Together, we will elevate social acceptance, amplify regional and local voices, and co-develop strategic policies and programs that foster inclusion and equity for all."

The Queensland LGBTIQA+ Alliance was established as a visible and accessible connection point for Queensland’s LGBTIQA+ communities, providing support for those who need it and guidance for allies and organisations eager to make a positive impact. By addressing longstanding disparities and fostering equitable access to services across regional, rural, remote, and metropolitan areas, the Alliance is paving the way for a future where all Queenslanders are connected, supported, and celebrated.  The Alliance plays a unique role in working with Government to progress the Pride in our Communities Action Plan.

As Rebecca takes the helm, the Alliance is well-positioned to build sustained partnerships, shape strategic policy, and champion programs that elevate inclusion and equity across Queensland.
